- Esteem aims to empower young people who have passed through the statutory care system - Many young people are unable to live with their families of birth; some have suffered from a lack of continuity due to closing children’s homes, unsuitable foster care and frequent disruption, changing homes, schools and friends. Insufficient foster placements often lead to inadequate education and career training. Our team at Esteem aims to engender feelings of security so that our society will become richer as more achieve the self–confidence and social skills that should normally develop within a supportive community.
- Esteem aims to offer 18 –26 year olds who need accommodation, training and work experience the chance to live abroad in centres throughout the EU and to enable young people of various nationalities to work towards personal life goals. Qualifications may be gained in traditional crafts, computer technology, second languages and more. There will be many opportunities to explore their creativity and contribute to the wider community.
- Esteem aims to provide a network of centres, (started in February 2005 in post tsunami India) and one planned for April 2010 in Spain, which will offer confidence building, support and samples of vocational training. Esteem will acquire dilapidated buildings of historic significance or with rural traditions within the European Community and re-build and restore them as sustainable structures. Our young participants will be trained in the skills which are necessary, not only to build and manage the properties, but also to turn them into centres for arts, leisure and personal development. These centres will promote a healthy environment and lifestyle and foster social integration while benefitting the wider community.
- Currently, over a quarter of all homeless people have been through the ‘care’ system. Esteem aims to make meaningful use of current Care in the Community Act (1990) and co-operate with local authorities to fulfil the aims of The Children Act, (1989), to 'advise, assist and befriend those over eighteen years of age of whose need they are notified’ plus The Leaving Care Act and ‘Quality Protects’ policies.
- Esteem is currently seeking to recruit new members who are willing to encourage and ‘mentor’ young people so that they can gain sponsorship for themselves to travel and work on our projects.
